The University of Colorado Boulder Libraries seeks an experienced, highly-motivated, and innovative professional for the position of Associate Dean of Libraries. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Associate Dean will play a critical role in continuing the evolution of a research library at the University. As a member of the Libraries Executive Committee and the Management Team, the Associate Dean works collaboratively to articulate the vision and strategic direction of the Libraries. The Libraries’ senior leadership and organizational structure have recently undergone substantial transition. As a result, the organization continues to pursue positive change in the provision of services, collections, and instruction as well as increased emphasis on the areas of scholarly communications, research data management, digital initiatives, and acquiring unique collections. The Associate Dean will play an important role in moving the Libraries forward in these areas.
The Libraries seeks an individual with an inclusive leadership style and strong communication skills, including the ability to consider issues from a variety of perspectives. This position currently oversees and coordinates the operations of approximately 19 faculty and 70 staff in the following departments: Archives & Special Collections, Circulation, Metadata Services, Programming and Communications, and Scholarly Resource Development (which includes Collections and Scholarly Communications). Working with the Executive Committee and the Management Team, the Associate Dean plays a leadership role in the formulation and assessment of Libraries-wide services, policies, and diversity initiatives. The Associate Dean must be committed to user-centered collections and services and will collaborate with the Dean, Senior Associate Dean, and department directors as well as campus constituencies to develop strategic directions and assess service quality.
Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are research and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado Boulder.
- MLS from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent;
- At least seven years of experience in an academic or research library, preferably in any of the following areas: collection development/management, scholarly communications, or metadata services;
- A proven record of successful leadership in progressively responsible positions managing librarians and staff;
- Awareness of current trends and demonstrated success in leading and fostering strategic innovation in a rapidly changing and complex academic and/or research environment;
- Embraces, models, and encourages teamwork, collaboration, relationship-building, and mentoring;
- Ability to work effectively and creatively to develop partnerships in a complex and rapidly changing library, campus, university system, and community;
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service;
- Ability to anticipate and adapt to changing needs and priorities in order to effect positive outcomes;
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate and advocate for an environment of diversity and inclusion;
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;
- Demonstrated record of scholarship, publication, and professional service.

Appointment and Salary
The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month), tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon professional experience and demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment may be at the level of assistant professor or above. Preference will be given to candidates eligible to be hired at the associate professor level or above. The salary is competitive and benefits include 22 working days vacation; 10 paid holidays; liberal sick leave; University group health care plan; group life insurance; TIAA/CREF, Fidelity, or Vanguard retirement/annuity; and support for scholarly/professional activities.

The Associate Dean of Libraries is a senior leadership position that reports to the Dean of Libraries. The Associate Dean of Libraries serves as a member of the Libraries Executive Committee and Management Team and is responsible for the following:
- Oversees and coordinates the operations of departments, including approximately 19 faculty and 70 staff who have responsibility for the departments of Archives & Special Collections, Circulation, Metadata Services, and Scholarly Resource Development (which includes Collections and Acquisitions), as well as the Programming and Communications Unit;
- Working with the Executive Committee and the Management Team, plays a leadership role in the formulation and assessment of Libraries-wide processes, policies, strategic planning, budgeting, and diversity initiatives;
- Collaborates with campus constituencies to align library services and collections to teaching and research activities;
- Fosters a collaborative work environment, encouraging personnel to work across Libraries departments as the organization continually embraces transition and change;
- Advances Libraries initiatives in scholarly communications, including the institutional repository, Open Access outreach and education, digitization projects, and research data management;
- Recruits, supervises, and evaluates faculty and staff;
- Prepares position statements, proposals, budget requests, reports, and other documents as appropriate;
- Plays a critical role in campus outreach to assess needs, develop financial capacities, and structure models for funding and intellectual rights management;
- Represents the organization and is responsible for all library operations in the absence of the Dean and the Senior Associate Dean;
- Provides guidance and mentorship to faculty in meeting university standards for promotion and tenure;
- Maintains a consistent record of significant scholarship/research and/or creative work and professional service;
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
