Government Publications Cataloger

 

The University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries invites applications from motivated and innovative librarians to perform cataloging of government publications. As the largest research library in the Rocky Mountain region, the University Libraries is committed to providing access to all types of materials in conformance with national standards and to advancing the field through active service, inquiry, and participation in cooperative programs.

 

Reporting to the Head of Monographic Cataloging, the Government Publications Cataloger is responsible for providing access to the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries’ collections, with a concentration on the Government Publications Department collections. The position works closely with the Government Publications Department. Cataloging is performed on OCLC for inclusion in the local Innovative Interfaces system and in the regional online catalog. As an original cataloger in the Cataloging & Metadata Services Department, the Government Publications Cataloger participates in PCC (NACO, SACO and BIBCO), OCLC Enhance, and the Federal Depository Library Program. In furtherance of the Libraries’ mission and departmental goals, the Government Publications Cataloger may teach other departmental and Libraries catalogers. The Government Publications Cataloger is a member of the tenure-stream Libraries faculty. Significant parts of the responsibilities of this position are scholarly activity and creative work and service in keeping with the tenure standards of the University of Colorado at Boulder.

 

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school
  • Experience in cataloging and metadata provision
  • Demonstrated experience with federal government publications and knowledge of the Superintendent of Documents classification scheme
  • Knowledge of MARC bibliographic and authorities formats
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Potential for scholarly activity and creative work and professional service

Desirable Qualifications

Evidence of any of the following will enhance a candidacy:

 

  • Experience with a national cooperative cataloging program such as PCC (NACO, BIBCO, SACO, or CONSER) and OCLC Enhance
  • Experience with cataloging a variety of materials or formats
  • Bibliographic knowledge of at least one non-English language
  • Knowledge of and interest in current issues, trends, and emerging standards in cataloging
  • Experience in a federal depository library
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment
  • Demonstrated initiative investigating new ideas and implementing change
  • Experience using technology to facilitate innovative ways to provide access to library collections
  • Evidence of achievement in research and creative work and professional service

Appointment and Salary
The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month) tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment will be at the senior instructor, assistant professor, or associate professor level. Starting salary range will be $44,000 to $52,000. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, liberal sick leave, university group health care plans, group life insurance, TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.

Government Publications Cataloger

 

Position Summary
The Government Publications Cataloger position is a tenure-track faculty position reporting to the Head of Monographic Cataloging in the Cataloging and Metadata Services Department (CMS) and working closely with the Government Publications Department. Primary job responsibilities include providing access to government publications, representing a variety of formats, languages, subjects, and levels of difficulty. Cataloging is performed in OCLC for inclusion in the Innovative Interfaces local system and in the regional online catalog. Standards currently in use include AACR2, MARC 21, LCSH, Superintendent of Documents classification, and Library of Congress Classification. Original catalogers participate in the PCC (NACO, BIBCO, and SACO), OCLC Enhance, and the Federal Depository Library Program.

 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Maintains a working knowledge of established cataloging standards, revisions, and trends in cataloging practices.

  2. Provides description and access, including subject analysis and classification, to federal, international, foreign, and state government publications.

    a. Works handled may be in any of a variety of formats, including books, serials, electronic resources, microforms, videorecordings, computer files, etc.

    b. Materials are cataloged within the framework of priorities established by the Libraries, CMS, and the Government Publications Department.

    c.   Works may require original cataloging; copy cataloging will be performed as needed.

    d. Works may be in any language and on any subject.

    e. Some records will be created within the framework of the BIBCO program.

  3. Performs authority work as necessary for names, series, and subjects encountered in the course of work; creates NACO or SACO records as appropriate.

  4. Applies new rules and interpretations as appropriate. Brings changes to the attention of the team leader as appropriate for discussion and possible implementation.

  5. Acts as cataloging liaison to the Government Publications Department, working collaboratively and in consultation with the department head and catalogers in Government Publications.

  6. Identifies and implements innovative technological processes for efficiently providing access to discrete segments of government publications collections.

  7. Assists in monitoring the flow of materials entering and leaving CMS and the Government Publications Departments and in making decisions as to the speed or level of cataloging to be performed.

  8. May plan, oversee, perform, or participate in CMS and Government Publications departmental cataloging, catalog maintenance, or other projects.

  9. May participate in the deliberations of the two departments, assisting in the delineation of policies and practices relating to cataloging.

  10. Performs recataloging and reclassification as required.

  11. Maintains an awareness of technological advances affecting cataloging, including the impact that local, network, or national capabilities may have on cataloging operations and catalog access. Brings problems and possibilities to the attention of the two departments for resolution or discussion.

  12. Maintains a consistent record of significant contributions in scholarly activity and creative work and professional service.

  13. May teach or deliver instructional presentations in furtherance of the Libraries’ mission and departmental goals.

  14. May participate in selection of materials for the Libraries’ collections.

  15. Performs other related duties as assigned.
