Job Summary:

FACULTY DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH AND INSTRUCTION

The University of Colorado Libraries invites applications from motivated and innovative librarians to provide leadership and expertise in reference services and information literacy instruction. As a vital part of the largest research library in the Rocky Mountain region, the Research and Instruction Department is committed to meeting the information needs of the campus community and visitors through general and specialized research services, research collections in the social sciences and humanities, and the provision of a library instruction and information literacy program. The Faculty Director of Research and Instruction is a tenure-stream faculty position reporting to the Associate Director for Public Services of the University Libraries. The Research and Instruction Department serves the university community by providing collections, programs, and services that meet the information needs of the social sciences and humanities, as well as instructional programs in support of the undergraduate core curriculum. Responsibilities include management and supervision of departmental activities and personnel, leadership in reference and instructional services, policy setting, and implementation and management of an information commons (currently in process.)  The position supervises a department that consists of 9 FTE faculty, 5.5 FTE classified staff, and an assigned student budget.

Requirements for the position include

    • Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library school
    • At least five years of relevant experience in a reference setting, which could include a government publications library, humanities interdisciplinary library, or a special collections department
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work in a collaborative environment
    • Effective oral and written communication skills
    • Demonstrated supervisory experience
    • A significant record of librarianship, research/publication, and service.

Preferences include

  • Record of increasing administrative responsibility
  • Degree(s) in social sciences and/or humanities field
  • Experience mentoring junior faculty and staff
  • Familiarity with emerging information technology
  • Demonstrated interest in and understanding of the management of current reference technologies in libraries
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative research environment.

Appointment and Salary
The successful candidate will be appointed as a full-time (12 month) tenure-stream faculty member. Depending upon professional experience and demonstrated accomplishments in scholarly activity, creative work, and service, appointment may be at the assistant professor or associate professor level. Starting salary range will be $73,000-$80,000. Benefits include 22 working days of vacation, ten paid holidays, liberal sick leave, university group health plans, group life insurance, TIAA/CREF retirement/annuity, and support for scholarly/professional activities. Tenured librarians are eligible for sabbatical leave.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Faculty Director of Research and Instruction

POSITION SUMMARY: The Faculty Director of Research and Instruction is a tenure stream faculty position reporting to the Associate Director for Public Services of the University Libraries. The Faculty Director of the Research and Instruction Department serves the university community by providing effective and flexible leadership in a constantly changing environment in 1) specialized collections, programs, and services that meet the information needs of researchers in the social sciences and humanities; 2) developing and promoting instructional programs in support of the curriculum; 3) administering general reference, information, and outreach services on behalf of the University Libraries, and 4) provision of electronic and print resources. The Faculty Director is responsible for the overall management and supervision of the department, which consists of 9 FTE faculty, 5.5 FTE classified staff, and assigned student wage budgets.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Faculty Director

  1. Provides leadership and vision; formulates departmental goals and objectives and carries them out based on the University Libraries Strategic Plan.

 

  1. Supervises departmental personnel
    1. Assigns and delegates areas of responsibility and general duties of faculty and staff;
    2. Is responsible for annual written evaluations for all departmental faculty and staff under direct supervision;
    3. Oversees and participates in reference desk duty, including nights, weekends, and virtual reference.
  1. Provides mentorship and guidance to tenure-stream faculty.

 

  1. Provides oversight of, leadership for, and participates in the campus-wide information literacy and fluency initiatives at the undergraduate and graduate level, including serving as program director for the Bibliography Department credit course.
  1. Establishes, maintains, and reviews the policies and procedures of the department within the confines of general University Libraries’ policies and procedures.

 

  1. Plans, organizes, and coordinates the projects and activities of the department
    1. Assesses staffing needs for the department and prepares justifications for changes in staffing levels;
    2. Analyzes current operations and recommends, plans, and implements changes with a view toward increasing and improving library services;
    3. Coordinates and develops the reference collection.

 

  1. Interprets and implements university and University Libraries’ policies for library users and departmental personnel.
  1. Represents departmental concerns and provides input for planning at library meetings; recommends policy and procedural changes.

 

  1. Provides reports to the administration covering the activities of the department.
  1. Participates as a member of the University Libraries’ Administrative Council.

 

  1. Maintains a consistent record of significant contributions in the areas of research and/or scholarly activity and service.
  1. Provides leadership in adopting and assessing new information technologies.
