English Dictionary: FAQ
How do I access the Oxford English Dictionary
(OED) from off-campus – or – do I need a password?
You do not need a password to access the Oxford English Dictionary (hereafter
the OED). The library / university is paying for the online subscription
for its students, faculty, and staff. However, the system needs to recognize
that you are officially a part of the university. If you are asked for a
password, one of three things is most likely occurring.
Are you trying to access the OED from off-campus?
If you are using an off-campus computer, the system will not recognize that
you are a CU student and you will not be able to access the articles. To
correct this problem, you can dial into the university modem pool, and this
will allow you to access the articles. To find out how to log onto the modem
pool, go to the following link: http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/research/offcampusaccess.htm
Are you trying to access the OED from a dorm
or other campus computer?
If you are using a dorm or other campus computer and you cannot access the
OED, then there is a technological problem that prevents the system from
recognizing your dorm computer's IP address as a campus computer. If this
is the case, you will need to use another campus computer. For example, the
computers at the reference section of the library will allow you to access
the OED. In addition, there is the 20 volume hard copy 2nd edition of the
reference work in the Reference Department. It is placed on a table, which
table is situated against the west wall of the Reference Department.
Are you using AOL?
If you are using AOL, you will not be able to access library sources. In
this situation, you may dial up to the CU modem pool (directions can be found
in the link above) and use either Netscape or Internet Explorer to access
the library sources. The other option is to use a different campus computer.
