1. Why is the Media Library closing?
The Media Library is closing as a part
of the University Libraries' ongoing efforts to make more efficient use
of both our staff and physical space.
Over
the next 1-2 years, the Libraries will be moving to a "One Desk" model
which will consolidate into one area all the various Reference points in
the Norlin building, as well as Circulation, Media, Reserves, and Interlibrary
Loan Services. Closing the Media Library is one step in that process. Eventually
the Media Library and neighboring spaces will be reconfigured as a new
comprehensive service point.
In the meantime, we expect several immediate
benefits to the Media Library closure:
Until the Media Library is reconfigured it will be opened up as a study
room (beginning Fall, 2007), providing much-needed study space for students
and faculty.
Media staff have been reassigned within the Library, allowing us to provide
better service in those areas.
Access to many of the Media collections
will be improved, in some cases by making those materials browsable (the
DVD collection), in others by making the materials self-bookable (DVDs,
VHS, study rooms) through Chinook, the Libraries' on-line catalog.
2. Where/How do I access Media Reserve materials?
Media reserves have been incorporated into Norlin reserves. Physical
materials (non-electronic formats) may be checked out at the Access Services
Circulation Desk, on the first floor of Norlin Library. Faculty wishing
to place Media materials on reserves should bring them to the the Circulation
Desk and fill out a request form for processing.
3. Where have all the Media Collections (DVDs, VHS, etc)
gone?
The Media collections have found new homes in various areas throughout
the Libraries:
• DVDs are now located in the lobby of the Access
Services circulation area. This collection is now open for browsing. Up
to five items may be checked out at one time. The circulation period is
one week, with one renewal. Faculty wishing to use DVDs for instruction
should book these materials well in advance. You may
book DVDs in Chinook, the Online Catalog, at the Circulation
Desk, by phone, or email.
• VHS materials will be housed at PASCAL, the University
Libraries' off-site storage facility. How
to Request Materials from PASCAL. Delivery time is next business day.

for VHS is one week, with one renewal. Faculty wishing to use VHS
for instruction should book these materials well in advance. You

• Microfilms. Some microfilms (mostly back files of major
newspapers) will be relocated to the Periodicals Room. Most other microfilms,
after review by the appropriate bibliographer will be relocated to PASCAL,
the University Libraries' off-site storage facility. How
to Request Materials from PASCAL. Loan period is the same as books
(28 days for students, 180 days for graduate students and faculty).
Until these materials are moved to PASCAL, or while awaiting bibliographer
review, they will still be housed in the Media Library. Requests for these
materials should be placed at the main circulation desk in Norlin, however,
as the Media service desk closed as of July 2, 2007.
• ERIC documents. ERIC documents are still housed at
PASCAL. To
request an ERIC document, fill out the online request form.
• Microfiche, Microprints, and other Media Materials.

will be relocated to PASCAL, the University Libraries' off-site storage
facility. How

4. Where are the microform printer/readers?
The microform printer/readers are now housed in the Periodicals
Room on
the 2nd floor of Norlin Library. There are four printer/readers available
for use whenever Norlin library is open. One microprint/microcard
reader is available in the Media library, but will also soon be moved to
the Periodicals Room.
5.Where are the electronic reserves scanners for faculty?
The scanners are in the process of being moved to the lobby of the Access
Services Circulation Desk in Norlin Library. Please stop at the Circulation
Desk to check out a password to the machines. Scanners are for electronic
reserves use only. Other
scanning stations on campus.
6. How can I be sure Media materials are available
for use in my classes?
Be sure to book well in advance any DVDs or Videos you may need for your
classes, otherwise they may not be available. You may book materials up
to one year ahead of time! Booking of DVD and VHS materials is only open to faculty.
You may book materials through Chinook, the online catalog, or at the Circulation
desk, or by phone (303-492-7477), or email norcirc@colorado.edu.
Non-faculty who need special arrangements should contact Cris Johnson.
7. Are the Media Study Rooms still available?
The Media Study rooms are available during Norlin Hours and close 15 minutes prior to building closure. Patrons with a valid library card may reserve
these rooms online.
Note that the rooms are for group viewing of/ listening
to audiovisual materials ONLY. These five A/V rooms are open to all current
patrons of the University Libraries.
8. Do the Libraries still provide duplication
services?
Yes, media duplication
services are now a part of Library Systems.
