About the Libraries > Libraries & Departments > Blue Room: Collection Development Policy
The Blue Room is a special collection of materials designed the supplement the Art & Architecture Collection located within Norlin Library. It is closed to the public. In keeping with the policies of the Art & Architecture collection (for more information see the Art & Architecture Collection Development Policy at http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/collectiondevelopment/art.htm ), these items are intended to further support the educational and research goals of the Departments of Art, Art History, Architecture and Planning, the academic community and the general public. All materials in the Blue Room are relevant to the study of Art & Architecture. Some general guidelines for the collection development of the Blue Room are as follows.
Format : Materials in the Blue Room include those issued in unconventional formats including unbound, pop-up, pamphlets, insecurely bound items, items printed on flimsy paper, extremely oversized items, CDs and DVDs, and other formats that make regular shelving and circulation difficult for the library or detrimental to the object.
Rare and Valuable : Books or other objects that are art related and are deemed rare or valuable may be kept in the Blue Room. These may include old publications, fragile items, books with fine bindings and/or fine printing, limited editions, autographed works, etc.
Protection from Theft & Vandalism : Materials containing visual images of a sexually explicit nature are located in the Blue Room. Also housed in the Blue Room are popular works, especially those with numerous glossy prints, whose images are likely to invite theft or vandalism.
Local Interest : Materials concerning Art & Architecture that are of particular interest to the University of Colorado and the Boulder community (for example: old CU art exhibition catalogs) are housed in the Blue Room.
Blue Room materials are for in-house use only unless special circulation arrangements are made with the Art & Architecture Librarian. Students may use Blue Room materials only in supervised areas within the library designated by the Art & Architecture Librarian. Controlled access to the Blue Room permits faculty, staff, students, and the general public to access materials that would otherwise not be selected and kept as part of the regular circulating collection. For more information on Blue Room policies and procedures visit http://ucblibraries.colorado.edu/art/blueroompolicies.htm.
Materials selected for the Blue Room are done so on an individual basis. Most materials in the Blue Room are not duplicated elsewhere in the Norlin Libraries. The Art & Architecture Librarian, Jennifer Parker, is responsible for the collection development of the Blue Room. Any questions or comments should be directed to her.
