Ackland Art Museum - online collection

Chapel Hill, NC

Affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Ackland Art Museum is especially rich in European painting and sculpture of the 15th - 19th centuries and in Asian painting and sculpture. The collections of drawings, prints and photographs are among the most significant in the Southeast.

Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery, University of Maryland-Baltimore - online collection

Baltimore, MD

Special collections at the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery contains more than 1.8 million images documenting the development of photography from daguerrotypes to digital imaging.

Aperture Foundation - online collection

New York, NY

Aperture Images is a collection of non-traditional stock photographs from contemporary commercial and art photographers. Images are available for purchase via licensing agreements.

Arkansas Arts Center - online collection

Little Rock, AR

Includes a strong collection of works on paper and contemporary crafts.

Art Gallery at the University of Maryland, College Park - online collection

College Park, MD

The Art Gallery's permanent collection consists of more than 1500 objects, ranging from African objects primarily from West and Central African cultures; twentieth-century art by European and American artists; American Social Realist and Regionalist work; and Asian art from the second century BCE to the twentieth century.

Arthur M. Sackler Gallery and Freer Gallery of Art - online collection

Washington, D.C.

The Smithsonian Institution's two galleries dedicated to Asian art. The Freer and Sackler galleries have one of the strongest collections of Asian art in the world.

Cleveland Museum of Art - online collection

Cleveland, OH

A broad collection of Western art from ancient to modern. Also has holdings in Asian art.

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum - online collection

New York, NY

Affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution. Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum's expansive international collection includes both historic and contemporary design, and extends from one-of-a-kind to mass-produced items.

Corcoran Gallery of Art - online collection

Washington, D.C.

Affiliated with the Corcoran College of Art + Design. The Corcoran's collection of 19th century American art is among the best in the world. The Corcoran also has a strong collection of contemporary American art.

Currier Museum of Art - online collection

Manchester, NH

The Currier features European and American paintings, decorative arts, photographs and sculpture, including works by Picasso, Monet, O'Keeffe, and Wyeth. The museum also owns Frank Lloyd Wright's Zimmerman House.

Des Moines Art Center - online collection

Des Moines, IA

The Des Moines Art Center has amassed a permanent collection with a major emphasis on contemporary art. The permanent collection's overriding principle is a representation of artists from the nineteenth century to the present, each through a seminal work.

Detroit Institute of Arts - online collection

Detroit, MI

The Detroit Institute of Arts is proud to claim one of the largest, most significant art collections in the nation. The collection includes the famous Detroit Industry fresco cycle by Diego Rivera, and numerous works of modern and contemporary American art, including movements such as Minimalism, Pop Art, and Abstract Expressionism.

Harvard University Art Museums - online collection

Cambridge, MA

Includes the Fogg Art Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum. The Fogg has a strong collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist work, as well as outstanding collections of photographs, prints, and drawings. The Busch-Reisinger Museum is the only museum in America devoted to the arts of Central and Northern Europe, with a special emphasis on the German-speaking countries. The Arthur M. Sackler Museum houses superb collections of ancient Islamic, Asian, and later Indian art.

High Museum of Art - online collection

Atlanta, GA

The Museum has an extensive anthology of 19th- and 20th-century American art; significant holdings of European paintings and decorative art; a growing collection of African American art; and burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, photography and African art. The leading museum in the Southeastern United States, the High is dedicated to supporting and collecting works by Southern artists and is distinguished as the only major general museum in North America to have a curatorial department specifically devoted to the field of folk and self-taught art.

Hirshhorn Museum - online collection

Washington, D.C.

The Smithsonian Institution's museum of international modern and contemporary art. The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has primarily focused its collection-building and exhibition-planning on the post-World War II period, with particular emphasis on art created during the last 30 years.

Hood Museum of Art - online collection

Hanover, NH

Affliliated with Dartmouth College. The Hood Museum of Art is one of the oldest and largest college museums in the country. Particularly noteworthy are the museum's collection of American portraits and landscape paintings, and its holdings of American and European prints, drawings, and watercolors. Native American, African, and Melanesian art are also well represented.

J. Paul Getty Museum - online collection

Los Angeles, CA

The Getty is an important center for research in the arts and humanities and houses an excellent collection of Western art from anitquity to the present.

Joslyn Art Museum - online collection

Omaha, NE

Nebraska's only fine arts museum with an encyclopedic permanent collection , Joslyn features works from antiquity to the present with a special emphasis on 19th- and 20th-century art from Europe and America.

Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art - online collection

Kansas City, MO

The Kemper Museum houses works of modern and contemporary art from around the world. Permanent Collection artists include Dale Chihuly, Arthur Dove, Louise Bourgeois, Andrew Wyeth, Fairfield Porter, Georgia O'Keeffe, Frank Stella, Lesley Dill, Romare Bearden, Christian Boltanski, Robert Mapplethorpe, Garry Winogrand, Kojo Griffin, Jim Hodges, Wayne Thiebaud, and Hung Liu.

Library of Congress - online collection

The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, with more than 130 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. The collections include more than 29 million books and other printed materials, 2.7 million recordings, 12 million photographs, 4.8 million maps, and 58 million manuscripts.

Los Angeles County Museum of Art - online collection

Los Angeles, CA

LACMA has a broad collection of art from prehistoric to contemporary with particular strenght in American, European, and East Asian art. Over half of LACMA's collection is available to view online.

Metropolitan Museum of Art - online collection

New York, NY

The Metropolitan Museum's collection contains more than two million works of art from all points of the compass, ancient through modern times. About 6,500 objects—highlights from each of the Museum's curatorial departments as well as the entire Department of European Paintings and the entire Department of American Paintings and Sculpture—can be accessed online.

The Museum of the Art Institute of Chicago has a comprehensive collection of works from ancient through contemporary including American, European, Asian, and African art. The Museum also has significant collections of textiles, furniture, and decorative arts.

The entire MCA Collection contains over 6,000 objects, with works representing trends in art after 1945 in all media including paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photography, video, film, installations, and artists' books.

Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles) - online collection

Los Angeles, CA

The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles is home to one of the country's finest collections of American and European art created since 1940. MOCA currently holds approximately 5,000 objects in all visual media, ranging from masterpieces of abstract expressionism and pop art to recent works by young and emerging artists.

The National Gallery of Art houses one of the finest collections in the world illustrating major achievements in painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and works on paper from the Middle Ages to the present. More than 5,600 objects from the collection are now available online.

National Museum of African Art - online collection

Affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution. The collection of the National Museum of African Art embraces the diverse artistic expressions found throughout Africa, from ancient to contemporary times. Collection objects range from ceramics, textiles, furniture and tools to masks, figures and musical instruments.

Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, University of Nebraska - online collection

Lincoln, NE

Affliated with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The permanent collection has more than 12,000 objects and includes works by Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Mary Cassatt and Georgia O'Keeffe.

Smithsonian American Art Museum - online collection

Washington, D.C.

Affliated with the Smithsonian Institution. Dedicated exclusively to the arts and artists of the United States, SAAM features colonial portraits, 19th-century landscapes, American impressionism, 20th-century realism and abstraction, New Deal projects, sculpture, photography, prints and drawings, contemporary arts and crafts, and folk art.

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York) - online collection

New York, NY

The Guggenheim Museum contains one of the world's strongest collections of modern and contemporary art. The online collection features highlights from the New York museum, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and the Deutsche Guggenheim. Highlights from the collection of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao will be available soon.

Spencer Museum of Art, University of Kansas - online collection

Lawrence, KS

Affiliated with the University of Kansas. The Spencer Museum serves as a resource for the teaching and study of art history, fine arts, and the humanities, and the collection is comprehensive in nature. It spans the history of European, North American, and East Asian art. Areas of special strength include medieval art; European and American paintings, sculpture, and prints; photography; Japanese Edo-period painting and prints; and 20th-century Chinese painting.

University of California-Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive - online collection

Berkeley, CA

The museum's collection has evolved with particular strengths in historical and contemporary Asian art; early American painting; mid-twentieth-century, Conceptual, and contemporary international art; and California and Bay Area art.

The Pacific Film Archive is home to the largest collection of Japanese films outside of Japan, as well as impressive gatherings of Soviet silents, West Coast avant-garde cinema, seminal video art, rare animation, Eastern European and Central Asian productions, and international classics.

The Walters Art Museum collection presents an overview of world art from pre-dynastic Egypt to 20th-century Europe, and counts among its many treasures Greek sculpture and Roman sarcophagi; medieval ivories and Old Master paintings; Art Deco jewelry and 19th-century masterpieces.

Yale University Art Gallery - online collection

New Haven, CT

The Yale University Art Gallery features works from ancient through contemporary in a range of geographic and cultural areas including the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
