Borrowing Privileges:
Institute & Workshop Participants
Library Use and Library Cards
With some exceptions, library materials may be used within the library by
anyone. If you wish to take items outside the library, you must apply for
borrowing privileges.
Participants in institutes and workshops are eligible for short-term privileges
at the Libraries. Depending upon the arrangements that have been made in
advance, you will either be included on a list of participants provided by
the Institute/Workshop Director, or you may be required to provide proof
of registration in the program. In either case, you must present a photo
ID at the main Circulation Desk in Norlin Library.
Once registered, the photo ID will serve as your library card. You must
present your photo ID every time you check out library materials. Your
library privileges are valid for the length of the workshop.
Loan Periods
Books circulate to Institute/Workshop Participants for 28 days or the expiration
date of the workshop, whichever is soonest. Books may be renewed if the
length of the workshop permits. Some items such as reserves circulate for
shorter periods. Institute/Workshop Participants may have up to 20 items
checked out on their account. A maximum of 5 reserve items may be borrowed
simultaneously.
Interlibrary Loan and Prospector Privileges
Institure and Workshop participoants are not eligible for either Interlibrary
Loan or Prospector privileges through the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Most public libraries and all academic libraries offer interlibrary loan
services to their patrons. Some Colorado public & academic libraries
are members of Prospector.
Please ask your local public or academic library about services and policies.
My Chinook
"My Chinook", a feature located on the Chinook
Catalog main page, serves as an access point to your library account. In
My Chinook, you may renew your own books, place or cancel holds, create
preferred searches, and use other Chinook services. You will need
a PIN Code in order to use this program.
If you do not currently have a PIN, leave the PIN field blank and
submit your request. You will then be asked to create your own PIN.
If you should forget your PIN number, have problems creating one, or your
PIN does not work, please come to the Circulation Desk in Norlin Library
and bring your picture ID. Even though we cannot see your existing PIN
number, we can delete it for you so that you can then create a new one.
Some circulation desks in branch libraries can also do this.
Renewals
Most books may be renewed for an unlimited
number of times (up to your workshop expiration date), unless recalled
by another patron. Books may be renewed in any of the following ways:
in person at the Circulation desk,
or
by phone at 303-492-7477, or
by e-mail at norcirc@colorado.edu, or
via the web by using the My Chinook option
in Chinook.
Fines
A receipt is printed for all books checked out at one time, indicating the
due date for each item. These dates may vary with item type. Effective
July 1, 2005, there will NO FINES for most materials. Reserves, recalled
books, and some special collections such as those housed in the Media library will
still generate fines. Should you be billed for an item and later return
it, there is a non-refundable service charge of $10.00 per item. Various
notices will be sent out reminding you to renew or return your books before
a bill is generated.
Email is the preferred method of communication, though for Institute/Workship
participants we will send notices by regular mail if an email address
is not provided. Please note, however, that courtesy notices (sent
out 3 days before items are due, alerting you to the fact that your books
will be due soon) are sent only for those patrons who have provided us with
an email address.

Recalls
If a book checked out to you is requested by another borrower, you will
be notified by e-mail of the adjusted due date. This new due date is the
latest that you can return materials before your library account is blocked
and recalled fines begin to accumulate . As long as there is a recall on
the book you cannot renew it.
Traces
If you are unable to locate a book in the stacks and there is no record
of its having been checked out, you may request that the Circulation staff
search for the item. This usually takes several days. After the trace is
completed, you will be notified by mail concerning the status of the book.
Revocation of Privileges
Circulation privileges will be revoked for anyone who has one or more overdue
recalled books, or one or more billed items. Charges for books assumed
lost and/or overdue fines will be referred to a collection agency as required
by Colorado State Law, if unpaid 30 days after the bill due date.
Replacement Charges
Items assumed lost (90 days overdue in most cases; 30 days for short
term checkouts such as reserves) are billed for replacement at the following
rates:
Books |
$200.00 |
Government Publications |
$ 50.00 |
If the item is returned, the replacement fee is waived and library privileges
are automatically reinstated, but effective July 1, 2005, there will be non-refundable
$10.00 service charge per item, to cover our billing costs. This
service charge applies to ALL LIBRARY USERS.
Returning Books
During library hours, please return books to the appropriate library. After
hours, you may use the outside book drops. We encourage patrons to obtain
receipts for books returned to UCB Libraries.
We discourage returning our books to non-UCB Libraries as you may be
held responsible if the book does not reach us.
