DIAL Searching Module

Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to choose DIAL collections in order to perform searches for digital objects
  2. Students will be able to perform simple keyword and quick field searches in order to retrieve relevant images and objects for individual needs.
  3. Students will become familiar with advanced search features (searching by data fields) in order to enhance and refine search results.

  2. Choosing Collections
    1. Explain collections and access
      1. Collections available are listed after sign-in
      2. In the JVA client you can select multiple collections to search
      3. Emphasize the right-hand side display box
        1. Provides descriptions of collections when one collection is selected
        2. Warn:  choosing the hyperlink for more information may take you to external website (Demo: Claire Holt)
    2. Direct students to choose a collection
    3. Demonstrate Changing from one collection to another
      1. Go to File, select Open Collection
      2. Talk about the similar functionality as choosing from main page but collection descriptions are listed below
      3. Have all students change to one collection (Claire Holt Collection).
  3. Searching
    1. Basic Keyword Searching
      1. Click on the Search menu.
      2. Select by keywords
        1. Keyword searching will locate terms anywhere in the object data (multiple fields)
        2. Once you select the keyword option a search box appears.
        3. Enter keywords:
          1. example: dance
          2. Point out :
            1. number of results: 86
            2. Occurrence of keywords in image data
        4. Multiple word example
          1. System will search all objects containing all words
          2. example: traditional dance java  
          3. Point out :
            1. Did not search terms as a phrase
            2. Searched multiple fields
            3. Number of results: 47
        5. Wildcard search example
          1. traditional danc* java (dancer, dancers, dancing etc)
          2. number of results: 80
    2. Specific Field Searching
      1. Choose Search by “Artist” option
        1. A text box appears as does a list all option
        2. Browse for an artist
          1. Choose list all option
          2. Alpha list of artists
          3. You may browse here
        3. Specific Artist
          1. Choose Search by artist option again
          2. Enter:  “batara” in text box
          3. Select list
          4. Choose appropriate entry (Ctrl to select both)
      2. Choose Search by “General Category”
        1. Demonstrate as means to view categories within a collection.
      3. Allow students to practice searching
        1. Provide task?-  example: I want to find a depiction of wajang wong dancers
    3. Searching by Data field
      1. Have users open new collection “MOAC”
        1. Select “Search by Data field”Demonstrate variety of fields available for searching.
      1. For text fields you can choose: equals, does not equal, contains, does not contain, begins with, and ends with.  
      2. Demo browsing creator name
        1. Choose field: creator name
        2. Choose relation: equals
        3. Choose “list all” function
      3. Change field by selecting “field” tab
      4. Have students select a field
        1. example:
          1. Select field: “current location”
          2. Select criteria: equals
          3. Choose from list all: “Phoebe Hurst Museum of Anthropology” (4061)
        2. Search
      5. If you wish to revise your search, select New Search
        1. You can narrow, broaden, or start over
        2. Choose “narrow search”
          1. Select field: Title
          2. Select relation:  contains
          3. Enter value:  dance (note when you don’t choose equals value is free text box)
        3. Search
        4. Notice effect of narrowing search (searches specific collection location and title criteria)
  4. Searching Multiple Collections
    1. Go to File, select Open
    2. Choose multiple collections here
      1. example: MOAC, Claire Holt, and Herbert
    3. Choose Search menu
    4. Select Search by data fields
      1. Note that different collections index differently
      2. Demo mouse over for number of collections supporting that field
