DIAL Searching Module
Objectives:
- Students will be able to choose DIAL collections in order to perform searches for digital objects
- Students will be able to perform simple keyword and quick field searches in order to retrieve relevant images and objects for individual needs.
- Students will become familiar with advanced search features (searching by data fields) in order to enhance and refine search results.

- Explain collections and access
- Collections available are listed after sign-in
- In the JVA client you can select multiple collections to search
- Emphasize the right-hand side display box
- Provides descriptions of collections when one collection is selected
- Warn: choosing the hyperlink for more information may take you to external website (Demo: Claire Holt)
- Direct students to choose a collection
- Demonstrate Changing from one collection to another
- Go to File, select Open Collection
- Talk about the similar functionality as choosing from main page but collection descriptions are listed below
- Have all students change to one collection (Claire Holt Collection).
- Searching
- Basic Keyword Searching
- Click on the Search menu.
- Select by keywords
- Keyword searching will locate terms anywhere in the object data (multiple fields)
- Once you select the keyword option a search box appears.
- Enter keywords:
- example: dance
- Point out :
- number of results: 86
- Occurrence of keywords in image data
- Multiple word example
- System will search all objects containing all words
- example: traditional dance java
- Point out :
- Did not search terms as a phrase
- Searched multiple fields
- Number of results: 47
- Wildcard search example
- traditional danc* java (dancer, dancers, dancing etc)
- number of results: 80
- Specific Field Searching
- Choose Search by “Artist” option
- A text box appears as does a list all option
- Browse for an artist
- Choose list all option
- Alpha list of artists
- You may browse here
- Specific Artist
- Choose Search by artist option again
- Enter: “batara” in text box
- Select list
- Choose appropriate entry (Ctrl to select both)
- Choose Search by “General Category”
- Demonstrate as means to view categories within a collection.
- Allow students to practice searching
- Provide task?- example: I want to find a depiction of wajang wong dancers
- Searching by Data field
- Have users open new collection “MOAC”
- Select “Search by Data field”Demonstrate variety of fields available for searching.
- For text fields you can choose: equals, does not equal, contains, does not contain, begins with, and ends with.
- Demo browsing creator name
- Choose field: creator name
- Choose relation: equals
- Choose “list all” function
- Change field by selecting “field” tab
- Have students select a field
- example:
- Select field: “current location”
- Select criteria: equals
- Choose from list all: “Phoebe Hurst Museum of Anthropology” (4061)
- Search
- If you wish to revise your search, select New Search
- You can narrow, broaden, or start over
- Choose “narrow search”
- Select field: Title
- Select relation: contains
- Enter value: dance (note when you don’t choose equals value is free text box)
- Search
- Notice effect of narrowing search (searches specific collection location and title criteria)
- Searching Multiple Collections
- Go to File, select Open
- Choose multiple collections here
- example: MOAC, Claire Holt, and Herbert
- Choose Search menu
- Select Search by data fields
- Note that different collections index differently
- Demo mouse over for number of collections supporting that field
