Glossary of Terms
- Annotation
- Within Luna Insight, this term refers to the ability to link to text notes, web links, or other digital objects.
- Browser Insight
- Access to the digital collections in DIAL, through a Web Browser. No installation is necessary. See JVA Client for other access options.
- Client
- An application that exchanges information with another application.
- Collection
- A compilation of digital objects that may include photographs, maps, historical documents, sheet music, sound files, video files, scanned images, etc. For more details on each collection, go to the DIAL collections homepage.
- DAM Committee
- University of Colorado System-wide committee charged with Digital Asset Management and the maintenance and use of digital materials for the University community.
- DAMS
- Digital Asset Management Systems are software programs designed to centrally house digital objects and digital collections (see Collection). Luna Insight is one example of a DAMS.
- Data Fields
- Fields in the digital object record that are descriptive and searchable (see Descriptive Information).
- Data Window/ Box
- The area where the descriptive information for an active image or object will appear. One can access this information by selecting the data tab from the main menu, or by selecting the descriptive data function from the tool bar.
- Descriptive Information
- Metadata (see Metadata) about individual images, which may include information such as date, author/artist, country, title, subject, etc.
- DIAL
- The Digital Asset Library of the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries.
- Group Window
- The area in Luna Insight that contains the thumbnail images and brief descriptive information of the images in a collection or search result; it is found on the right side of the screen. At the bottom of the group window are navigation keys for scrolling through the collection or search results.
- Image Workspace
- The area in Luna Insight where you may work with selected images.
- JVA Client
- A client (see Client) that offers access to DIAL's digital collections with functionality beyond the Browser interface. It must be installed on your computer. The JVA client is available for download.
- Luna Insight
- Software that stores, manages, and displays digital images, audio, video and QuickTime VR. It is used by DIAL and the University of Colorado Digital Library.
- Metadata
- Descriptive/identifying information about a digital object.
- Thumbnails
- A smaller version of an image that is linked to the larger image and descriptive data.
- Thumbnail View
- The images of a collection or search are displayed as a group of thumbnails. They are displayed on the right side of the screen in the group window.
- Truncation
- A search method that allows you to search for variations of a word using the asterisk (*). Example: looking up ALL Denver maps by searching for file names by entering "den*".
