A discipline that deals with the technological aspects of
buildings, including the properties and behavior of building materials
and components, foundation design, structural analysis and design, environmental
system analysis and design, construction management, and building operation.
Environmental systems, which may account for 45-70% of a building's cost,
include heating, ventilating and air conditioning, illumination, building
power systems, plumbing and piping, storm drainage, building communications,
acoustics, vertical and horizontal transportation, fire protection, alternate
energy sources, heat recovery, and energy conservation. In addition, to
help protect the public from unnecessary risk, architectural engineers
must be familiar with the various building codes, plumbing, electrical
and mechanical codes, and the Life Safety Code. (Access Science)

Abstracts and Indexes to Academic
or Scholarly Articles
Although many databases contain links to full-text articles, when
you find article or book citations in the index databases, you need to
search Chinook to see if University
Libraries own that periodical or book title.
CU Applied
Science and Technology Index
Indexes trade and industrial publications, journals issued by professional
and technical societies, and specialized subject periodicals, as well
as special issues such as buyers' guides, directories, and conference
proceedings. Coverage: 1983 - present.
CU Architectural
Index
Indexes a small selection major architectural journals, including
Architectural Record, Builder, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture.
Emphasis is on aesthetics rather than engineering. Coverage: 1982 -
present.
CU ASCE
Research Library
The Research Library provides access to more than 33,000 full-text papers from ASCE Journals and Proceedings.
Coverage: varies.
In addition, the ASCE Civil Engineering Database indexes and abstracts all ASCE publications, including journals, conference
proceedings, books, standards, manuals, magazines, and newspapers back to 1970. When available, this Database links to the full-text in the Research Library. The handout below explains how to search and find full-text from the CE Database.

CU Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals
The Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals database offers a comprehensive listing of journal articles on architecture and design, including bibliographic descriptions on subjects such as the history and practice of architecture, landscape architecture, city planning, historic preservation, and interior design and decoration. It contains more than 440,000 thousand entries surveying over seven hundred American and international journals. Coverage: Varies.
CU Engineering
Village 2--Compendex and INSPEC
Compendex is a comprehensive bibliographic database of engineering
research literature. Contains references and abstracts to engineering
journals, conferences and technical reports. Subject areas include:
chemical and process engineering, computers and data processing, applied
physics, electronics and communications as well as civil and mechanical
engineering. Includes links to full text when available.Coverage: 1884
- present.
INSPEC is a bibliographic database that indexes physics, astronomy and
astrophysics, electrical engineering and electronics, computers and
control engineering and information technology. The database contains
full-text links when available. Coverage: 1898 - present.

Scitopia
This federated vertical search portal was created through the collaboration of 15 leading science and technology societies. It searches the entire electronic libraries of these societies, including more than three million documents, peer-reviewed journal content and technical conference papers, spanning 150 years of science and technology can be searched through the site. Though the search is freely available, access to many documents requries authentication. Coverage varies.
