  • Earth From Space
    Choose a type of photo (cities, significant features, etc.) or chick on a map to select images of earth taken from space.
  • EarthExplorer (USGS)
    A database that can be used to identify (and order) aerial photography, digital line graphs, maps, satellite imagery, and elevation data. Login as guest or create an account to use the databases. This database replaces the USGS Global Land Information System.
  • EarthObservatory (NASA)
     "The purpose of NASA's Earth Observatory is to provide a freely-accessible publication on the Internet where the public can obtain new satellite imagery and scientific information about our home planet." The site enables users to build animations of variables such as surface temperature of the oceans and compare these temperature variations to other factors such as population growth. The site includes reference materials, fact sheets, and suggested classroom activities.
  • EROS Data Center
    Home page of the Earth Resources Observations Systems of the U.S. Geological Survey. The site provides access to two image files:
    • Earthshots: Satellite Images of Environmental Change
      A file of satellite (LANDSAT) imagery and text data for places around the world that are experiencing environmental change. Designed for high school students, Earthshots allows one to use a clickable map, or choose topographical features, locations or disasters from an index.
    • Global Visulazation Viewer (GloVis)
      A quick and easy online search and order tool for selected satellite data. The viewer allows user-friendly access to all available browse images from the Landsat 7 ETM+, Landsat 4/5 TM, Landsat 1-5 MSS, EO-1 ALI, EO-1 Hyperion, MRLC, and Landsat Orthorectified data sets, as well as Aster TIR, Aster VNIR and MODIS browse images from the DAAC inventory. Through a graphic map display, the user can select any area of interest and immediately view all available browse images within the USGS inventory for the specified location.
  • Geomorphology from Space
     "The core of this book is a gallery of space imagery consisting of 237 plates, each treating a geographic region where a particular landform theme is exemplified. Commentary, photographs, locator maps, and sometimes a geologic map accompany each plate."
  • PhotoFinder
    A tool to identify and order USGS National Aerial Photography Program (NAPP) Photos. "NAPP, the National Aerial Photography Program, is an interagency Federal effort coordinated by the USGS, which uses NAPP products to revise maps. Other agencies have many other uses for these photographs, which, taken on roughly a 5-year cycle and produced to rigorous specifications, cover the entire lower 48 states. The photos are shot from airplanes flying at 20,000 feet. Each 9-by 9-inch photo (without enlargement) covers an area a bit more than 5 miles on a side."
  • TERRA
    "Terra is the first satellite to monitor daily ­ and on a global scale - how the Earth's atmosphere, lands, oceans, solar radiation, and life influence each other. Terra's wide array of measurements will give a comprehensive evaluation of the Earth as a system and will establish a new basis for long-term monitoring of changes in the Earth's climate for future satellites."

  • Microsoft TerraServer
    Provides access to a "repository of aerial photographs and satellite images taken from miles overhead that you can view and, if you want, purchase." The database can be accessed through a series of point-and-click maps or through a search for place name or geographic coordinates. Images are linked to a mapping application. Uses images from the USGS and the SPIN-2 satellite.
