The database is based on the holdings of the library of the Natural Hazards Center which "houses an extensive collection of social science literature focusing on how society prepares for, responds to, recovers from, and mitigates natural disasters". Many of the disasters are weather-related.

- Natural Hazard Statistics
This site provides "statistical information fatalities, injuries, and damages caused by weather related hazards. These statistics are compiled by the Office of Meteorology and the National Climatic Data Center from information contained in Storm Data, a report comprising data from NWS forecast offices in the 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands." The site provides state and US summaries and separate reports on lightning, tornadoes, tropical cyclones, heat, floods, cold, winter storms and wind. Data available from 1995 to present.

A knowledge-based system that uses point measurements of precipitation, temperature, and other climatic factors to produce continuous, digital grid estimates of monthly, yearly, and event-based climatic parameters. PRISM data sets are recognized world-wide as the highest-quality spatial climate data sets currently available. PRISM is the USDA's official climatological data.
