LexisNexis Congressional CU Full text service which provides access to Congressional bills and bill status, legislative histories, hearings, Congressional Record, congressional reports and documents, biographical , financial and voting record information, laws, proposed and existing regulations, searchable full-text journals and other information.

General Information

  • About the U.S. Government from the United States Information Agency includes information on how laws are made, history of the constitution, discussion of democracy, and other governmental links.
  • Almanac of American Politics CU provides capsule summaries of states, congressional districts, congressional redistricting, biographies of elected officials (President, Vice-President, Governors, Senators, and Congressional Representatives), election results, campaign finance, basic demographic data, and other information. Password available at any reference desk.
  • C-Span provides extensive information, including streaming video of speeches and campaign advertisements.
  • Center for Responsive Politics (OpenSecrets.org) includes a race-by-race analysis of campaign contributions for the upcoming elections, congressional candidate profiles, and detailed analysis of major PAC contributions. The Personal Finance section includes copies of personal finance reports filed by the members of the House and Senate, the President, and selected presidential candidates.
  • Common Cause This is an advocacy group for the participation of citizens in government, it has numerous reports on recent political issues.
  • Colorado Fair Campaign Practices Act (FCPA) online search by contributor name, committee name, and expenditure. Includes information from 1988 to the present.
  • The Favor Factory: Congressional Earmarks
    This is a database of lawmakers, earmarks, and campaign giving from the Seattle Times.
  • CQ Library CU includes CQ Weekly and CQ Researcher.
  • Election 2000 "The Election 2000 Collection developed for the U.S. Library of Congress by the Internet Archive, and Compaq Computer, is now being made available as an Internet librarycontaining archived copies of more than 1000 election-related Web sites (http://archive.alexa.com). The collection, searchable by date, by website, and by category via Alexa’s new Wayback Machine technology, contains more than two million megabytes, or about 87 million pages, of election-related information gathered between August 1, 2000 and January 14, 2001, including what was published on the candidates’ web sites, political party sites, and major news sites."

    • Federal Election Commission (FEC) Campaign Finance Information with reports filed by House Campaigns, Party Committees, and Political Action Committees.
    • FEC Info/Political Money Line : a page which presents FEC data with additional features including search by contributor name, zip code, top contributors by state and other information.
  • Gallup Poll
  • Government In America an online companion to work published by Longman includes brief summary of each chapter, plus all the links, visuals, sample test questions, and activities grouped by chapter.
  • Inside Politics from CNN and Time.
  • On the Issues Features quotes on major issues by candidates. Browse by candidate or issue.
  • National Political Index: an extensive collection of national and state links.
  • Registered Federal Lobbyist Database search by name or interest area. A component of an extensive site on lobbying provided by the Center for Responsive Politics Results include: organizations that hire lobbyists, the lobbying firms, the dollar amounts spent on lobbying, the names of individual lobbyists, legislative areas of interest, and whether the lobbyist was a "covered" employee who had worked in a legislative or executive post in the last two years.
  • Political Advocacy Groups: An Index Links to national organizations advocating on public policy issues. Access by subject or name.
  • Political Money Line Free database on campaign finance information. Search back to 1980 election circle.
  • Political Organizations Section 527 Search Under a law (PL 106-230), political organizations must file an initial notice with the IRS, periodic reports on contributors and expenditures, and modified annual returns. The site provides basic information about the organization and, in some cases, copies of filings.
  • Project Vote Smart
  • Roll Call Online includes policy briefings, committee assignments, information on new members, richest Senators and Representatives and other information.
  • SpeakOut A center for political activisim. Provides background information, opinion polls, news, and centers for activisim on selected topics.
  • ThisNation provides a textbook on American government, quizzes, cartoons, clipart, summaries of political news, and more.
History
  • American Political Prints 1766-1876 Images of prints in the collections of the Library of Congress, including: advertisements, allegorical prints, badges, ballots, banners, broadsides, calendars, caricatures, pictorial lettersheets, picture puzzles, political cartoons, political posters, portrait prints, picture puzzles, sheet music, sheet music covers, and tobacco package covers.
  • The Living Room Candidate : A History of Presidential Campaign Commercials View television commercials from 1952-present online. Requires a media player.
  • Presidential Elections 1860-1912 features political cartoons from Harper's Weekly, Leslie's Illustrated Weekly, Vanity Fair, Puck, Judge, and the Library of Congress Collection of Illustrated Prints 1766-1876.
  • TP: Images of American Political History A database containing over 500 images relating to American political history. The database includes maps, engravings and photographs of significant leaders and events. The collection can be browsed by date or searched. Each image includes a description and link to a larger version of the image.
Trivia
  • Political Graveyard an online index to the gravesites of state and national politicians. Use the alphabetic or state indices to find date of death, place of burial. The politicans are also grouped into categories such as Politicians Who Died in Disgrace and other topics.
