• National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
  "NHTSA is responsible for reducing deaths, injuries and economic losses resulting from motor vehicle crashes. This is accomplished by setting and enforcing safety performance standards for motor vehicles and motor vehicle equipment, and through grants to state and local governments to enable them to conduct effective local highway safety programs." The agency provides a crash test database, information on highway safety-related issues such as airbags, car seats, vehicle recalls, and other information, including:
  • Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS)
    Provides online access to data on Fatal Crashes by Roadway Function Class and Atmospheric Condition; Vehicles Involved by Rollover Occurrence; Driver Reports, and Fatality Reports. The Driver and Fatality Reports include a wide variety of data on blood alcohol content (BAC), motor vehicle violations, use of restraints (seat belt), vehicle type (such as large truck, emergency vehicles, etc.), time of day, pedestrian fatalities, fatalities in the beds of pickups, train collisions, urban and rural roads, and other factors.

    Provides bibliographic information for Aviation, Highway, Marine, Pipeline/Hazardous Materials, and Railroad accident reports and studies released through National Technical Information Service (NTIS). These reports are available on microfiche in the CU Government Publications Library. Railroad Accident reports for the period 1911-1966 are available from the Online Digital Special Collections.
