  • Agricultural Resources and Environmental Indicators database and mapping tool
    This database provides access to the latest agricultural data on a variety of topics, from fertilizer use to angora goats. The mapping system uses geographic information system (GIS) mapping and database retrieval technologies.
  • American Factfinder
    Census 2000 mapping tools are available on this web site. The "Start with Basic Facts" section of the web site includes a tool to map selected demographic variables from 1990 and 2000 for states by county. Census 2000 Summary File 1 (100 percent data on age, sex, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household type, relationship, group quarters, whether the residence is owned or rented, and vacancy status) includes tools to map cross-tabulated data (such as the number of Hispanic homeowners/renters in an area) for smaller areas (such as places, counties, census tracts, or block groups). Choose "Census 2000 Summary File 1" from the Data Sets menu of American Factfinder. Use the "Thematic Maps" tool to create small area maps. See the Tutorial at the University of Michigan for suggested ways to use the American Factfinder.
    Note: Before you dig into the detailed maps, you may want to identify the relevant census tract and block group numbers with the 2000 census maps or address search feature.

  • Enviromapper
    Use this service of the EPA to create custom maps with environmental information, including air releases, drinking water, toxic releases, hazardous wastes, water discharge permits, and Superfund sites.
  • Geographic Names Information Server
    USGS can be used to query a database by state, county, or feature name or feature type. The server supplies name, coordinates, elevation, feature type and other information that can be mapped at the Census Tiger map server.
  • GEOnet Names Server
    This web site provides access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's (NIMA) database of foreign geographic feature names.
  • Indian Land Areas Judicially Established 1978
    This map of Native American lands "portrays results of cases before the U.S. Indian Claims Commission or the U.S. Court of Claims in which an American Indian tribe proved its original tribal occupancy of a tract within the continental United States."
  • International Nuclear Safety Center Database
    This database, from the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, includes maps of nuclear plants around the world.
  • Map Collections: 1500 - 1999
    Digital maps from the Library of Congress. The maps are grouped by cities/towns, conservation/environment, discovery/exploration, general maps, cultural landscapes, military battles/campaigns, and transportation/communication. The site also provides access to national atlases published from 1790 to 1970.
  • Mapping Census 2000: The Geography of U.S. Diversity
    "Presents a synthesis of the basic patterns and changes in U.S. population distribution in the last decade. Each page features county-level detail for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico." Available in its entirety or as the following subsections: Total Population, Diversity, White, Black or African American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, Two or More Races, Hispanic or Latino Origin, and White, Not Hispanic or Latino Origin.
  • Maps for Census 2000
    A guide to Census Bureau geographic products including maps and GIS data. Includes a glossary of terms; a good overview of product uses; and tips, techniques, and software for manipulating/printing data and maps.
  • State of the Land
    This Natural Resources Conservation Service resource includes a wide variety of maps, publications, and data on land-use topics such as agricultural productivity, cropland, grazing land, irrigation, land cover and use, private forest land, soil erosion, soil quality, water quality, wetlands, and other topics.
  • U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geological Map Database
    Resource for maps and related data about geology, hazards, earth resources, geophysics, geochemistry, geochronology, paleontology, and marine geology. Includes information and guides to topographic maps, geochronology, paleontology, and marine geology
  • U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Publications Warehouse
    The reports and thematic maps database currently contains more than 69,000 USGS bibliographic citations, including USGS numbered series having started as early as 1880. Citations and online documents are added regularly. Availability of content ranges from full text to bibliographic citation only. The database does NOT include the Superintendent of Documents number used to shelve the material in the Government Publications Library.
  • U.S. Geological Survey National Map provides access to a number of online services, including:
    • Geographic Names Information Server
      Can be used to query a database by state, county, or feature name or feature type. The server supplies name, coordinates, elevation, feature type and other information which can be mapped at the Census Tiger map server.
    • National Atlas of the United States
      An interactive mapping database. Includes a search feature for geographic names and options for choosing layers of data. Digital copies of the original 1970 national atlas are available from the Library of Congress.

  • Color Landform Atlas of the United States
  • Demographic Data Viewer
    This service uses the 1990 Census data and the Tiger Boundary files to create maps of census data by state, county or region. Select from a list of variables to create a .gif format map. Although the user can select up to 25 variables, only the first selection will be mapped. Data can be mapped to the county, tract or block group level.
  • Digital Map of the United States
    Created by Professor William Bowen, this web site contains maps featuring 1990 population variables (ancestry, race, income, poverty, adult educational attainment, and citizenship). Maps include country boundaries.
  • Earth Viewer
  • ESRI: Internet Mapping Demonstrations
    Includes interactive mapping of state'level data, mapping of Toxic Release Inventory sites, and other features.
  • ESRI/FEMA Project Impact
    "...FEMA and ESRI have formed a National Partnership in part aimed at providing multi-hazard maps and information to U.S. residents, business owners, schools, community groups, and local governments via the Internet." The site includes a feature to create a hazard map online. Choose a location by ZIP code, city, and state or choose a congressional district. Map options include flood hazard zones, recent and historic earthquakes, historic hail storms, tornadoes, wind storms, and hurricanes. Maps can be printed or e-mailed. The site also includes links to emergency management sites by state and other information.

  • Geography Network
    This service of ESRI "is a global network of geographic information users and providers. It provides the infrastructure needed to support the sharing of geographic information among data providers, service providers, and users around the world. Through the Geography Network, you can access many types of geographic content including dynamic maps, downloadable data, and more advanced Web services."
  • Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names
    A browsable, searchable thesaurus of 1,000,000 names representing 900,000 places worldwide.
  • Great Globe Gallery
    includes ozone maps, sea temperature, time zones, and more.
  • Historic Maps

  • Map Links
    A nicely annotated list of map-related sites, grouped by category, from the Map Library.
  • MapQuest
    Interactive Atlas and Route Planner lets you generate a small street map and plan routes between cities.
  • Microsoft TerraServer
    Provides access to a "repository of aerial photographs and satellite images taken from miles overhead that you can view and, if you want, purchase." The database can be accessed through a series of point-and-click maps or through a search for place name or geographic coordinates. Images are linked to a mapping application. Uses images from the USGS and the SPIN-2 satellite.
  • National Digital Map Library
    A "collection of digital maps created at the Geospatial and Statistical Center using public domain data sets. In keeping with our goal, we have created a set of coverages for 50 of the United States using USGS Digital Line Graph (DLG) data and ESRI data. DLG data has a scale of 1:250,000 while ESRI data has 1:2,000,000. Coverages available from the DLG data are: State Boundary, County Boundaries, National Parks and Forests, Hydrography, and Major Cities."
