How do I...?

Public Patrons: Retrieving Articles During Construction

During the Norlin Revitalization / construction process, many of the print journals / serials that used to be found in Norlin Library's Periodicals Room may be temporarily unavailable.

How do I find out what is available?

  • Online Access: You can check Chinook, the library catalog, to see if the Library has online access to the article or journal volume that you're looking for. (Instructions for Searching for a Online Access to a Journal / Serial via Chinook)

  • Current issues: Current, unbound issues of journals formerly housed in the Periodicals Room are now available in the Reference Department, on the first floor of Norlin (map).

  • Journals at PASCAL: Journals that are located in PASCAL, the Library's remote storage facility, are available (by request) for public patrons who hold a public patron borrowing card. (Instructions on how to recall bound journal volumes from PASCAL)

  • Journals at other CU-Boulder Libraries (Engineering, Business, Music, etc.): Journals that are available from other libraries on the CU-Boulder campus are unaffected by the construction. Only materials that were formerly housed in Norlin's Periodicals Room are affected. Search Chinook, the library catalog, to see if the journal you're seeking is located in another campus library.

If what you're looking for is not online, in current issues, at PASCAL, or at another campus library:

  • Public Libraries: Contact your local public library to request an interlibrary loan of the journal article/issue/volume you're seeking. (List of Colorado Public Libraries)

  • Other Academic Libraries: Other academic libraries in the area may subscribe to the journal you're looking for. You can search Prospector, a combined library catalog for libraries in Colorado and Wyoming, to see which other libraries own the journal. Please contact the library in advance of visiting to learn about their services for public patrons. (List of Colorado Academic Libraries)

We apologize for any inconvenience that the construction process may cause. To learn more about the Norlin Revitalization Project, please visit the Norlin Revitalized page.

If you have additional questions, please Ask Us.

Instructions for Searching for Online Access to a Journal / Serial via Chinook

  1. To search for online access to a journal in Chinook, use the Find Journals/Serials search option and enter the title of the journal you want to find. The example below is looking for the "Journal of Social Policy."

Once you search for a journal, you will see results screen that looks like this:

You can check the online availability of the journal by clicking on the title of the journal that is followed by the word "Online" (in this case, the "Journal Of Social Policy Online"). If you were taken directly to a page containing information about where the journal can be found in print, the journal is not available online at the CU-Boulder Libraries.

  2. If you click on the title of the journal (followed by "Online"), you'll see a page that looks like this:

This is a list of online databases that contain the content of the Journal of Social Policy. It is important to note the years covered - for this journal, the CU-Boulder Libraries have from access from January 1997 to the present available online. If the article / journal volume that you're looking for falls within this time frame, click on the title of one of the databases to locate that material.

  3. If online access is unavailable, please try one of the other options for finding journal articles / issues at the CU Libraries during construction.

  4. If you have any additional questions, please Ask Us.
