There is a great deal of controversy concerning the validity of college rankings and the methodologies used to develop these rankings. It is suggested that the use of college ranking resources be done so with caution.

Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Learning

Carnegie Commission on Higher Education's ranking system, established in 1970, for institutions in the United States. This ranking system has been used by the Higher Education community as the main source of classification.

 

College Blue Book

Guide to 2 and 4 year schools in the US and Canada.  Details include descriptions of degrees, environment, cost, entrance requirements and more. CU

 

College Board

Provided by a not for profit organization composed of educational institutions who aim to encourage student college success.

 

College Opportunities Online Locator

Department of Education search feature that allows you to limit college/ university listings geographically and by area of study.

 

College Source

Database that provides access to course catalogs to US colleges and universities. Requires CU affiliation for access. CU

 

Consus Group Rankings

Consus is an information provider for the business, investor, and legal communities and was founded by lawyers and management consultants. The site ranks general college and universities, business schools, and law schools.

 

Kiplingers.com

100 best values in public institutions created by Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine.

 

Online Education Database

Database of accredited online universities and colleges including the degrees and programs offered.

 

Peterson's College Search

Gateway to Peterson's rankings and college preparation resources. Some areas of the site require a fee for access.

 

Students Review

Searchable reviews of colleges and universities compiled via student opinion and surveys.

 

Top American Research Institutions

Provided by the Center for Measuring University Performance. The report collects raw data from approximately 600 research institutions. The Center's site also provides numerous other resources concerning university performance and evaluation.

 

Web US Higher Education

Provided by the University of Texas at Austin. Lists accredited colleges and universities.
