How do I... find College Rankings?

Few topics in education are as controversial as college and university rankings. 
There are as many ranking methods as there are ranking sources. Different sources have different goals – some are purely academic and others focus on campus social life, school location or some aspect of the curriculum.  
Here are some articles that discuss the controversy in ranking schemes and lists.

Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Learning

Carnegie Commission on Higher Education's ranking system, established in 1970, for institutions in the United States. This ranking system has been used by the Higher Education community as the main source of classification.



College Blue Book

Guide to 2 and 4 year schools in the US and Canada.  Details include descriptions of degrees, environment, cost, entrance requirements and more. CU


College Board

Provided by a not for profit organization composed of educational institutions who aim to encourage student college success.


College Opportunities Online Locator

Department of Education search feature that allows you to limit college/ university listings geographically and by area of study.


College Source

Database that provides access to course catalogs to US colleges and universities. Requires CU affiliation for access. CU


Consus Group Rankings

Consus is an information provider for the business, investor, and legal communities and was founded by lawyers and management consultants. The site ranks general college and universities, business schools, and law schools.


Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine: 100 Best Values in Public Colleges

The 100 best values in higher education.



Online Education Database’s (OEDb) Online College Rankings

Rankings for online colleges and universities. Rankings are based on: acceptance rate, financial aid, graduation rate, peer Web citations, retention rate, scholarly citations, student-faculty ratio, and years accredited.



Online PhD Program

Blog posts, articles, and other information about online Ph.D. programs


Peterson's College Search

Gateway to Peterson's rankings and college preparation resources. Some areas of the site require a fee for access.


Top American Research Institutions

Provided by the Center for Measuring University Performance. The report collects raw data from approximately 600 research institutions. The Center's site also provides numerous other resources concerning university performance and evaluation.

Rankings of universities/colleges according to various criteria

The American Dental Education Association

The ADEA Division of Dental Education Pathways serves as the gateway to dental education.  An essential resource for pre-dental students, students in dental education programs, counselors, advisors, admissions officers, and dental educators.



Association of University Programs in Health Administration

The directory lists programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and executive levels, and provides information such as websites and e-mail addresses for all programs, names of program directors, a detailed table presenting program/student information, expenses, and application and acceptance information.



American Association of Colleges of Nursing

Provides financial aid information, programs and AACN member schools.



American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy



Association of American Veterinary Colleges

Provides college information, school data and career guidance.



Physician’s Assistant Education Association

This directory lists contact information, admissions deadlines, entrance requirements, credentials awarded, tuition fees, financial aid, clinical affiliations, and other information for each of the 154 accredited PA programs across the country.

The Association of American Law Schools

Provides a list of member schools who are in good standing with the AALS.




The American Bar Association

A total of 200 institutions are ABA-approved: 199 confer the first degree in law (the J.D. degree); the other ABA approved school is the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's School, which offers an officer's resident graduate course, a specialized program beyond the first degree in law. Five of the 200 law schools are provisionally approved.



U.S. News Online- Top Law School Rankings

Rankings for over 170 accredited law schools based on a weighted average of such measures of quality as reputation, selectivity, placement success, faculty resources.
