  1. How long can I keep my loan?
Length of loan and renewals are determined by the lending library.   Generally a book will check out for 3 weeks or more and audiovisual materials for 1 to 2 weeks. We as borrowers must follow the lender’s instructions and return the items when they are due.

  2. How do I renew my loan?
If your loan is renewable, log on to your ILLiad account and click on “Checked Out Items” under the “View tab”. Locate the item you wish to renew and click on it. If the item is renewable, a renew button will appear at the top of the request.  At this time you will be given a tentative due date two weeks in the future. Once your renewal is accepted by the lender, you will be contacted by ILL staff via email with the new due date.

If your renewal is denied by the lender, you will receive and email instructing you to return the item. The amount of time given to the renewal is decided by the lender and must be observed.

If the item is not renewable, this button will not appear. Also, if the item is not renewable, “No Renewals Allowed” will be written on the yellow ILL slip accompanying the item.

  3. Why is my loan “Library Use Only”?
Some libraries make their loans “library use only” meaning that the item cannot, under any circumstances, leave Norlin Library. Lenders often make their materials library use only when the item is rare or fragile. Some libraries, such as the Library of Congress, require all of their materials be library use only. These restrictions must be obeyed without exception. Failure to abide by them can cause the entire campus to lose borrowing privileges from these institutions. We understand that these restrictions are difficult for the patron, but please know that we request materials with these restrictions as a last resort.

  4. Why is my loan in Special Collections?
Some lenders require that certain materials be kept in a supervised reading area. Because of this, these materials are sent to Special Collections.  Fragile materials are sent to Special Collections to insure that they are handled properly.

  5. Can my loan be recalled?
Yes. A recall can be issued by a lending institution and that item must be returned. If recalled, you will receive an email from the ILL staff and the item must be returned immediately.

  6. Can I pick my loan up at a different CU Boulder Library?
Unfortunately, no. ILL has a unique circulation system that doesn’t interface with the Libraries circulation system.  ILL materials are held at Norlin Library and must be checked out from there.

  7. Where do I return my loan?
All ILLs must be returned to the circulation desk in Norlin Library. ILLs should not be returned to branch libraries. These libraries cannot check in and return these materials and must ship them to Norlin.

  8. What do I do if I’ve lost my ILL paperwork?
If you lose your yellow ILL slip or bag, please give your ILL directly to the Norlin Circulation staff when you are ready to return it. Items returned without their bags or paperwork may be mistakenly reshelved with CU materials or sent back to the wrong lender. The borrowing patron is responsible for all ILL materials until they are received by ILL staff or the patron is issued a receipt by Norlin Circulation.

  9. What do I do if I’ve lost or damaged my loan?
If you have lost or damaged your ILL, immediately contact the ILL staff at cu-ill@colorado.edu  (preferred) or at 303-492-1617.

  10. Why does my ILLiad account show my loan as “check out” even though I returned it?
ILL returns are held by Norlin circulation staff until picked up by ILL staff on weekday afternoons. If you return an item after the daily ILL pick up or on the weekend or on a holiday, these materials will not be checked in until the next business day. If you have returned an item and it is still marked as “checked out” in ILLiad several days after returning it, please contact ILL staff.
