Interlibrary Loan FAQ

As part of our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service, CU Libraries borrows materials that are not available in the CU Libraries from other libraries and vendors. This includes materials not owned by CU Libraries, as well as items that are checked out, lost or missing.

 

Before requesting material through Interlibrary Loan, please check Chinook or Prospector for local copies. We do not order via ILL any materials which the University Libraries already own, unless that material is missing or temporarily unavailable (e.g. at the bindery, etc).

 

Am I eligible?

Current CU faculty, staff and students may use this service. Law affiliates have their own service.

What can I request?

We will try to obtain any type of library material. However, A/V materials, textbooks, whole journal volumes, genealogical sources, unpublished manuscripts, and materials that are rare, fragile, or in high demand are often hard to get.

How do I place a request?

  1. First, check Chinook, the CU Libraries catalog and Prospector (Colorado libraries)
  2. If you cannot find what you need, log into ILLiad, our interlibrary loan system and place your request.

How long will it take?

Plan ahead when requesting materials. Turnaround time for traditional ILL varies widely, depending upon where the book is available. Expect to wait 2-4 weeks. You can check the status of your loan by logging into ILLiad.

Where do I pick up my materials?

Books must be picked up at Norlin. Books will be held at Norlin until the due date. (Map) (Hours)

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for this service. However, overdue fines will be charged at the same rate as the CU Libraries, and the missing book cost is typically $200.

How long can I check out material out?

Books generally check out at the discretion of the lending library; DVDs and sound recordings check out for shorter lengths of time. Renewal is at the discretion of the lending library.

How do I renew materials?

To renew a book, log in to ILLiad.

  1. Select Checked Out items, and the Transaction Number of the item to renew.
  2. Click Renew Request
  3. You will be notified by email about the renewal is accepted or rejected.

How do I return materials?

Materials must be returned to Norlin. (Map) (Hours)
