Circulation Policy
Most maps can be checked out from the library. Many of our CDs may also be checked out. Atlases, reference materials, and maps published before 1950, rare or fragile maps, or those encapsulated between mylar do not circulate. Most non-circulating items may be photocopied. Circulation of Map Library materials is at the discretion of Map Library staff.

Maps circulate for 14 days to patrons with valid library photo ID. CD's circulate for 2 days. Please complete check-outs 15 minutes prior to closing.

Please return maps to the Map Library, during our business hours. Hand the map to an employee or place in the return box in front of the reference desk. You may request a return receipt if you wish.

If your patron type designates renewal privileges, you can renew your maps or books any of four ways.

Maps are delicate items. Please handle them with care. If you need to hang the map up for a presentation, please ask for a hanging kit. Do not put pins in the maps. Please do not take our maps on a trip our out in the field. We will give you a protective tube or envelope when you check out a map; please return the map in it. If we give you the map rolled in a tube, please do not fold it.

Fines for late, lost, or damaged materials are intended as a deterrent and can far exceed the original cost of a map. You are responsible for keeping track of due dates. The Library sends out overdue notices as a courtesy only.

Fines are charged on reserve, recalled, lost, or damaged items.  Fines begin to accumulate on the first day or the first hour after an item is overdue. Fines accrue as follows:
  • Overdue recalled items $2/day $40 maximum
  • Overdue reserve items $2/hour $40 maximum
  • Items declared "lost" will incur a $50.00 replacement charge
  • Damage charges and replacement processing fees are extra
