  • EarthSLOT
    "EarthSLOT is a collection of 3D GIS and terrain visualization applications designed to allow scientists, resource managers, educators, and the public better understand our planet and the earth science that goes on here."
  • Google Earth
    Worldwide satellite imagery. Download KMZ (zipped) files for USGS topographic maps in Google Earth here (from the Google Earth Library).

  • CommonCensus Map Project
    U.S. maps based on regional identity, i.e. "the boundaries people themselves feel, as opposed to the state and county boundaries drawn by politicians." Will be updated as more votes are gathered.
  • Green Atlas
    "The debut volume of the multimedia Green Map Atlas series is freely accessible online, in English and Japanese. It includes 88 pages illustrated with over 350 photographs and map views. In the future this series will focus on other world regions or themes, such as youth or waterways mapping."
  • Green Map

  • Mapping Worlds
    Cartograms (maps in which a thematic mapping variable is substituted for land area) of the U.S. and the World, based on various themes.
  • Maps of War
    Links to multi-media maps of various conflicts, some current and some historical.
  • Modern Language Association Language Map
    Uses data from the 2000 United States census to display the locations and numbers of speakers of thirty languages and three groups of less commonly spoken languages in the United States.
  • Obesity Maps (on "Ban Trans Fats" site)
    Maps from the Centers for Disease Control show obesity trends in the U.S. based on Body Mass Index statistics. (For additional information, see http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/obesity/trend/maps/index.htm)
  • Poverty Mapping
    Poverty mapping is a joint initiative by FAO, UNEP and the CGIAR - and partners.The site is currently continously maintained by UNEP/GRID-Arendal.

  • Speech Accent Archive
    "The speech accent archive is established to uniformly exhibit a large set of speech accents from a variety of language backgrounds. Native and non-native speakers of English all read the same English paragraph and are carefully recorded. The archive .. is meant to be used by linguists as well as other people who simply wish to listen to and compare the accents of different English speakers.
  • Thanksgiving Food Maps from Indiana University Libraries
    Maps and posters showing where in the U.S. foods commonly eaten for Thanksgiving dinner are grown.
  • UC Atlas of Global Inequality
    "Time series maps of the world enable the user to see changes in global patterns of inequality every 10 years from 1960 to 2000. With these map sequences you can examine changes in life expectancy, GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per person, and many other measures."
  • UNEP/GRID-Arendal Maps and Graphics resources
    "This service is an on-going project to collect and catalogue all graphic products that have been prepared for publications and web-sites from the last 15 years in a wide range of themes related to environment and sustainable development." Includes interactive maps.
  • Worldmapper
    "Worldmapper is a collection of world maps, where territories are re-sized on each map according to the subject of interest." This type of map is called a cartogram. Subjects include immigration, emigration, numerous imports and exports, population, and various types of transportation. Click on "Map Index" or "Map Categories" to browse.

  • Earth & Moon Viewer
    View a map of the Earth showing the day and night regions at this moment, the Earth from the Sun, the night side of the Earth, the view from above any location on the planet specified by latitude, longitude and altitude, or from a satellite in Earth orbit. You can also view the Moon from the Earth, Sun, night side, above named formations on the lunar surface, or as a map showing day and night.
