"Some Data in Regard to Foundations in New Orleans and Vicinity"

With such an exciting title you might think this book would be good bedtime reading, but it is actually quite interesting. Put out by the Works Progress Administration of Louisiana in 1937, this book contains many maps of New Orleans, including a city plan from 1770. This material is followed by information on pile foundations under some of the important buildings and test borings showing the stratagraphs of the city. One of my favorite foundations is that of the Lake Pontachartrain Seawall, which shows not only how far the pilings went down for the foundation, but also how much the seawall had sunk, 3-4 inches in some places, since it was built 6 years earlier.
