Feb 14, 2008 Periodicals Collection Project Update
In October 2007, we announced a major remodeling project that will occur in Norlin Library over the next 18 to 24 months. A major part of the project involved reconfiguring the current Periodical and Reference Rooms to include better access to our electronic resources and research services. This reconfiguration is a two stage process: first moving selected bound periodicals to Pascal and then temporarily moving the remaining bound periodicals to Norlin Basement before construction begins on the second floor in May 2008.
On Tuesday, February 5th, Norlin Library began the herculean task of moving 50% of the bound periodicals (approximately 70,000 items), identified by Faculty and Bibliographers, to the basement of Norlin to begin our remodeling project. In the next few weeks the plan is to begin moving 10,000 of these basement items every two weeks to Pascal. We are not precisely certain how long it will take to complete moving, these items or how long before they will be processed to be available from Pascal. In order to maximize access to these items as they move to storage during the next six – seven months we will provide electronic article delivery for any of these items.
Starting February 14, you will see a clickable link in each Chinook journal record for items not already available online saying "Request electronic copy." Alternatively, you can place requests directly through the Find it at CU Article Finder Form. These requests will usually (85% of requests) be filled within 2 business days. This means you will have access to all these materials as they are processed for Pascal. In this manner The University Libraries is doing everything possible to maintain access to the entire journal collection during this transition.
If you have questions please contact your library liaison or the Associate Director for Public Services, Susan Anthes <susan.anthes@colorado.edu> at 303-492-6897.
The Periodicals Collection contains general magazines, foreign and
domestic newspapers, and journals in the social sciences and humanities
disciplines. Periodicals Room staff are available to provide assistance using
the library catalog to identify collection holdings and searching periodical-related
databases.
Bound journals may be checked out at the Circulation Desk (first floor)
for a period of two days to University of Colorado faculty, staff and
students. Unbound issues may be checked out in limited quantities by faculty,
staff and graduate students for overnight use only. This can be done
at the Periodicals Room service desk. Journals may not be recalled,
held, or renewed.
