Drop-In at Norlin

 

Come join us for our drop-in seminar series.

The seminars are designed to be informative, fun, and helpful. Anyone may attend, though the sessions are limited to 13 attendees on a first come first served basis.

Trying to work your way through the labyrinth of Norlin? This session will introduce you to the library website and resources. It will also show you some tools for exploring Norlin Library, both electronically and physically. Bring your questions and learn the answers to many others!

Demystifying Government Publications

The Government Publications Library has over 5 million items and this presentation will help you figure out how to start your search for materials. We will look at finding materials in Chinook, on the library web site and finally we will look at a few of the databases that index this material, such as NTIS and LexisNexis.

Declassified Documents

Top Secret, Restricted Access, For Your Eyes only. We'll demonstrate some of the electronic resources available for finding declassified materials from the government. Our focus will be on two databases, but we will also provide a brief description of the FOIA process and show some free sources. The truth is out there.

Census Secrets

Can sticking gravel up your nose cause idiocy? This session will explore what the census is and how to find what you need, from historical data, research, and commentary in the Decennial Censuses from 1790 to 2000 to current data, population estimates, and projections available in electronic databases like the American FactFinder.

Finding Foreign Information

Want to compare the emerging markets in developing countries? Interested in researching the history of the conflicts in the Middle East? Or maybe you want to learn more about the genocide in the Sudan. This session will provide you with some starting points for finding information on a particular country, how to find data, reports and more.

Finding Government Statistics

Need some stats for your research? This session will discuss how to start a statistical search and how to determine which resources to use. The session will focus on sources for historical statistics in print format as well as statistical databases like the Census, Lexis Nexis Statistical, UN Common Database, World Development Indicators, and more.
