Drop-In at Norlin

 

Come join us for our drop-in seminar series.

The seminars are designed to be informative, fun, and helpful. Anyone may attend, though the sessions are limited to 13 attendees on a first come first served basis.

Lies, More Lies, and Statistics

Need some stats for your research? This session will discuss how to start a statistical search and how to determine which resources to use. The session will focus on sources for historical statistics in print format as well as statistical databases like the Census, LexisNexis Statistical, UN Common Database, World Development Indicators, and more.

RefWorks

Need help Citing? Refworks is a bibliographic manager that stores citations, builds works cited, and more! RefWorks is a web-based tool for managing your citations. In this hands-on session, we'll cover the basics of creating a RefWorks account and database, including importing citations from online resources and generating formatted bibliographies. We'll also work with Microsoft Word and incorporate citations from your RefWorks database into your documents.

Discovering the Developed World

This session will attempt to help start your research on countries in the developed world. It will cover both statistics and finding information on the countries themselves. We will discuss both print and electronic resources, such as Eurostat, Europa, SourceOECD, the United Nations, and much more.

This session will focus on finding information on developing countries, such as Sudan, Iraq, and China. It will cover both statistics and information on the countires themselves. We will discuss both print and electronic resources, such as World Development Indicators, Global Development Finance, the United Nations, and much more.

Does the Census have current data on America?

Are the data from Census 2000 too old for you now? With the new American Community Survey, some cities and counties will have access to annual demographic and socio-economic estimates from the Census. By 2010, every county, Census place (city or town) and Census tract will have new data every year, not just every ten years. Come learn about the American Community Survey and see a demonstration of the American Factfinder website.

Are you looking for newspaper articles for your research? Come learn about the various search tools available to you for finding relevant newspaper sources. Editorials, political cartoons, and features from yesterday and today.

Did you know that Dr. Seuss worked for the War Department? Realize that you can check out posters and maps printed by the government? This session will discuss some of the interesting sources of information from the government answering questions like can you go insane from sticking gravel up your nose.

What the bleep does Congress do?

A class of Congress lasts for two years and its chief function is in making laws. This drop-in session will provide a summary of the steps in the federal lawmaking process and how to find the documents and materials produced along the way. We’ll talk about and search for Congressional hearings, reports, documents and prints. We’ll also look at the research materials Congress has prepared as background for making laws and recommending policies. Finally, we will look at ways to keep current on events on the Hill. Join us as we attempt to take the chaos out of legislative research.
