Group Visitation Policy
Teachers and school librarians are asked to adhere to this policy when planning
a visit to the University Libraries with a group of more than 10 students.
1. Schedule in Advance
Contact us at least two weeks in advance at 303-492-0450
so that we may offer planning advice. Due to budget limitations, library
staff are no longer able to routinely provide organized tours or instruction
sessions to visiting K-12 groups.
2. Grade Levels
Visiting students should possess appropriate levels of maturity, independence,
and intellectual curiosity necessary to be productive in a scholarly environment.
Individuals enrolled in AP, IB, or other advanced classes that are engaged
in research projects are the students most likely to benefit from a visit.
Most students below Grade 8 are likely to find our building and collections
overwhelming and overly challenging.
3. Size of Groups
Due to a limit on the number of computer terminals available, the University
Libraries can only successfully accommodate group sizes of 20
individuals or less if students will be conducting research.
4. Timing for Visits
The best times for visits are during the University's interim periods, fall
break, spring break, and summer sessions. The worst times for visits are during
September, October, February, and March. These months represents exceptionally
busy research periods on campus when books and computer terminals are very
heavily used and frequently unavailable. Also, most service desks are exceptionally
busy at these times, and visiting students may not receive the attention they
need in order to ensure a successful research experience. No group
visits may be made on Reading Day or during Finals Week in deference to the
stressful time this is for students and faculty on campus.
5. Help for the visit
School librarians should accompany visiting K-12 groups if at all possible.
6. Circulation Privileges
With some exceptions, library materials may be used within the library
by anyone. If you wish to take items outside the library, you must apply
for borrowing
privileges.
University Libraries policy specifies that Colorado residents must
be 18 years of age or older to check out library materials as public
patrons. As most K-12 students will not meet this age requirement, students
should bring an appropriate amount of change to photocopy library materials
($0.15 per page) or print from library computers ($0.10 per page).
7. Parking on Campus
On-campus parking is extremely limited both days and nights. All visitors
are encouraged to carpool or take mass transit when visiting the University
Libraries. For campus parking information, contact Parking
Services / 303-492-2322.
