Drop-In Seminar Series at Norlin

 

Come join us for the Drop-in Seminar Series!

 

The seminars are designed to be informative, fun, and helpful. Anyone may attend, though the sessions are limited to 13 attendees on a first come first served basis. Seminars take place in Norlin E160 (near the main reference desk) unless otherwise noted.

SPECIAL SESSION: Using the New Library Catalog

This summer the library catalog, Chinook, got a brand new look! This session will navigate through the changes and demonstrate all the familiar search features and more. Come learn how to find library materials in all our campus libraries and beyond, as well as how to use ‘My Chinook’, save searches, and much more. This session is designed for those unfamiliar with the catalog, old or new.

RSS: Make Information Come to You

RSS (or "Really Simple Syndication") allows you to have the content of different websites, blogs, podcasts and headlines delivered to you through an RSS (or "feed") reader. Come to this session to learn how to choose an RSS reader, subscribe to RSS feeds and create an RSS feed yourself.

Drop-in this session to learn the research strategies that the pros (i.e. your friendly librarians) use to dig deeper into a subject area and find related resources. This drop-in session will examine sources of information on current military operations (US and UN) and terrorism. We will focus in on some of the major sources of information, from groups such as the U.S. government, United Nations, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, and Strategic Studies Institute.

Show Me the Money! Campaign Finance

Even though the presidential election doesn’t occur until November 2008, there are already millions raised by the various candidates. There are also fundraising efforts underway for Senators and Representatives. This drop-in session will show you how to find out who is giving money to whom and look at some sources for who is getting the most for their donations.



Cite Your Sources with Ref Works

Need help Citing? Refworks is a bibliographic manager that stores citations, builds works cited, and more! RefWorks is a web-based tool for managing your citations. In this hands-on session, we'll cover the basics of creating a RefWorks account and database, including importing citations from online resources and generating formatted bibliographies. We'll also work with Microsoft Word and incorporate citations from your RefWorks database into your documents.



Researching employers/Preparing for interviews

Learn how to research employers before you submit your resume or interview for a job. Critical knowledge about industry trends, companies, key people and current projects can be obtained if you know where to look. This information might just give you the edge you need to land the job!



What's in My Backyard? Local Environmental Issues

Is that a power plant down the street? What emissions are released at the lab? What is the air quality of my neighborhood? Find the answers to these and other questions in this drop-in session which will explore some of the resources of the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Library of Medicine.
