Anna Maria Porter:Ballad Romances and Other Poems. London, Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1811. WPRP 175.
Born in Durham, Porter was the daughter of William Porter, an army surgeon, and of Jane Blenkinsop. She was a younger sister of Jane Porter, the historical novelist and grew up in Edinburgh. Her first collection of tales was published in 1795; her ‘Fair Fugitives’, with music by Busby, was performed at Covent Garden in 1803 but was not well received. She is best known for her novel, The Huguenot Brothers (1807). The catalogues of Bodley and NLS both ascribe Original Poems on Various Subjects, by a Young Lady, Eighteen Years of Age (n.d.) to her, but some of the poems in it pre-date her birth.
The Binding is beautiful. Impressed leather with gilt trim. Worn edges. Marbled end-pages.
