Notes

The poem is introduced by a prose letter containing criticism of Werter and particularly a discussion of the character Charlotte whom the author considered "ungenerous, vain, unfeeling;...one the more dangerous to s0ciety because not actually criminal". This takes up the first 16 pages. The letter signed and dated: E. W., i.e. Lady Eglantine Wallace, June 21st, 1787.
