The Libraries Media Services can reproduce a variety of analog and digital media formats for academic, promotional, or personal use. Using our versatile toolset, we can copy media, edit clips, encode web files, and convert between many old and new formats, including audio/video tapes, discs, and file formats of all kinds. Color disc printing and bulk duplication are available.

Whether you are affiliated with the University of Colorado, a business or non-profit community organization, or you need help with a personal project, we might be able to help you. Contact us if you have any questions: 303-735-2681; MediaServices@colorado.edu.

The following descriptions will help you identify the type and method of media duplication, reformatting, or conversion that best fits your request.  Corresponding prices are listed in the sections below.

Video Capture and File Conversion
Convert and encode any supported video format (tape, disc, or file) to a digital file format for use in presentations, editing applications, publishing on the Internet, download to mobile devices (iPhone, Blackberry, iPod), etc.  Common file formats are Flash (FLV, SWF), MP4, QuickTime (.MOV), and AVI (see complete list below).

Audio Import and File Conversion
Convert and encode any supported audio format (tape, disc, or file) to a digital file format for use in presentations, editing applications, publishing on the Internet, download to mobile devices (iPhone, Blackberry, iPod, etc).  Common file formats are AAC, MP3, AIFF, and WAV (see complete list above).

Files to be converted can be submitted to us on CD or DVD, USB flash drive or other flash media (Compact Flash, SD Card, etc.).  When the file conversion is complete, we can save it back to your flash drive or to a CD or DVD.

Videotape to DVD Conversion
Convert any supported videotape format (listed above) to DVD.  This is a real-time, analog-to-digital recording process.  The tape is converted as one continuous program, and no menu-accessible chapter or program breaks are inserted on the DVD.  See below for information on including a Custom DVD menu.

Custom DVD Menu
Include a customized DVD menu that displays each chapter, clip, or program break that you wish to create. You must first preview the videocassette or DVD to identify the precise start and end times for each break. The DVD menu is accessible from your remote control or media player.

Foreign Region Video Conversion (PAL/SECAM to NTSC)
Convert a foreign region VHS tape or DVD to a format (DVD or VHS) that can be played on equipment in North and South America (NTSC). Or, vice versa, convert an American DVD or VHS tape to a foreign region format (PAL/SECAM).  Due to the difference between formats, the original disc menu usually cannot be retained during conversion.  See above for information on creating a Custom DVD Menu.

Video Clip Editing
Create a DVD or videotape containing multiple video clips or programs.  Clips can be compiled and edited from tapes, discs, or video source files.  A DVD menu can be created for navigation between clips (see above for information on creating a Custom DVD Menu).

Disc Copy (Audio and Video)
Duplicate a single copy of a CD or DVD.  Direct disc-to-disc duplication may not be possible for some types of audio and video discs.  In this case, real-time transfer will be required and normal audio or video conversion pricing will apply.  See below for Multiple Copies option.

Audiotape and Vinyl Disc to CD Conversion
Convert an audiocassette, reel tape, vinyl disc, or video soundtrack to CD.  See “Audio Compilation” for creating an audio mix.

Audio CD Compilation
Create a “mix” combining multiple audio tracks or songs on a CD.  The mix can be compiled from audiocassette, reel tape, vinyl disc, or other audio sources.

Multiple Copies and Bulk Duplication
Reproduce multiple copies of any supported video, audio, or data format—in small or large quantities—to CD or DVD.  You provide the master, or we can create the master for you using one of the above methods.  See chart below for Bulk Duplication Rates.

Prices include blank discs, color disc printing, and slimline cases.  See corresponding descriptions above for each price category.

Explanation of Service Fees
For nearly three decades, our audiovisual duplication services have been a convenient and reliable resource supporting academic research and teaching on the CU Boulder Campus.  Fees charged to University and community patrons support the non-profit operation of the Libraries Media Services Auxiliary, including its expenses for hardware and software, supplies, and student assistant labor.  The Auxiliary does not receive funding from student tuition fees or the general budget.

Media Services provides the blank media for all customer orders.  To ensure consistent and reliable results, we use only the highest quality blank disc and tape media recommended by the industry for stable copying and compatibility with most players and disc printing systems.

As the cost of flash memory comes down, the distribution of information on USB flash drives—including audiovisual media—is becoming a viable option for education use.  Instead of copying your media files to CD, DVD, or tape formats, consider the versatility and convenience of portable USB.  If you prefer the USB method, please submit your own thumb drive with your duplication request.  Keep in mind that uncompressed video files may require as much as 16 – 32GB of storage capacity, depending on program time lengths.  For files compressed for the web or portable devices, a drive with a minimum 1GB storage capacity is recommended.

We print your title information and any graphic images, in color, directly to the CD or DVD disc face.  We will provide a suitable background theme from our image library, or you can submit your own jpeg image to include on the printed disc.
